The Comics Grid is a born-digital, open access, open peer review academic journal dedicated to comics scholarship.

This journal’s purpose is to make original, media-specific contributions to the field of comics scholarship and to advance the appreciation of comic art. Our ISSN is 2048-0792.

The current deputy editor is Kathleen Dunley (Rio Salado College, USA) and the editor-in-chief is Ernesto Priego (City University London, UK).

We have a rotating editorial board and editorial advisory board. We are always open to collaborating with others. Our current board can be seen here.

The project was initially conceived by comics scholars Roberto Bartual (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), Esther Claudio (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), Ernesto Priego (City University London), Greice Schneider (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) and Tony Venezia (Birkbeck College, London) in discussions during conferences in London, Manchester, Copenhagen and Leeds.

We believe that online, open access, rapid scholarly publication offers great potential to maximise academic research and teaching impact. All contributions, including those by members of the editorial board, are collectively reviewed, edited and discussed by academic peers prior to publication.

We are passionate about the importance of digital literacy and public engagement. As a side-effect of our initiative we also encourage scholars to become fluent in online publishing and to engage in online dissemination and public engagement practices through effective uses of social media and other online strategies.

We aim to contribute to de-ghettoise the field of comics studies and to encourage digital research by enabling public engagement through online collaborative publishing strategies. We seek to promote comics scholarship within academia and a wider educated readership interested in the arts and humanities, therefore our call is for contributions that present specialised knowledge in an accessible language.
