James (Gottlieb) Smith is the software architect for MITH, the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities. Before joining MITH, James was the lead digital humanities developer for the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University (TAMU). As part of the MITH team, he has a hand in developing the architecture of various projects.

James received his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics in 2000 or 2001 (a long time ago).
He earned his M.A. in English from TAMU as well in 2008 with a focus on creative writing.
His research interests focus on enabling humanities research through computation.
When not working, James enjoys cooking, singing, writing, and exploring the Washington, DC, area.
